Cybug

"Vigilantism often bubbles up when there is a breakdown—real or perceived—of the state, of international order, of stability and security, which is certainly something we’ve seen in the early 21st century. For people who feel that their status had eroded, it allows them to feel some sense of control and power." -Quartz

About

Kendall arrived at State University roughly a decade after the Phantom Virus incident. They're an outlier as an English student in a very tech-focused college but, according to them, this was the best they could afford, plus they were rooming with a friend at the time of their enrollment. Something of a loner, the only club they're active in is a creative writing club with four other active members, and their home life now consists mostly of hiding from their constantly-fighting roommates and maintaining their vigilantism.

Cybug is their online persona, and they use that persona to put predators on blast. Focusing mainly on child predators, they set up sting operations, then alert the local authorities to the location and specifics. Now that they have Phantom with them, they've begun actually carrying out the stings personally, as they aren't quite as afraid of what could happen if it goes wrong. They haven't hurt anyone yet, but they aren't object to it. Their vigilantism has gained them the ire and reluctant gratitude of the local law enforcement, as they're the main source of arrests for child endangerment.

Their vigilantism, combined with their upbringing of surveillance and traps, has given them an honed sense of paranoia. This paranoia often leads them to wear a mask around the house, simply in the event that cameras are watching. They seem constantly exhausted and spaced out, and have a very weak grasp on verbal communication. They've been diagnosed with ADHD, major depression, and general anxiety. They also tend to show signs of psychosis such as paranoid delusions and dissociative episodes, but those have yet to be pinned down.

Game over!

Phantom Virus

Romantic, boyfriend

Contrary to popular belief, Phantom didn't die when the Mystery Gang beat the game he had infected. Rather, he was set to an inactive state, stuck in a sort of code stasis until the next player reactivated him. That next player happened to be Cybug, who had found the old prototype in storage while snooping around the computer labs. Once reactivated, he gave them directions on how to operate and fire the old laser that brought him into reality in the first place.

He now lives with Cybug in their apartment, hidden from the rest of society. They try their hardest to make the best of the predicament together.

Cybug is the closest to my actual self out of all of my self-inserts.

They tried to go to a batting cage together once in an attempt to get Phantom back in touch with his interests. This nearly ended in disaster as one of the younger athletes wanted to study his batting stance and Cybug had to remind the virus that his disguise was not, in fact, foolproof.

Cybug is a dense idiot while Phantom is a straightforward flirt. It can take them days to realize that he was flirting with them during a conversation.
